ESPN decided not to film the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, which incorporates five poker disciplines. While the event has become prestigious among poker die-hards, it doesn't translate well to television and the ratings suffered.

Instead, ESPN will be airing coverage of three events from this year's WSOP: the 40th anniversary $40,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em event, the Ante Up for Africa event and the Main Event.

Coverage of this year's World Series of Online Poker Betting will be different from the last few years.

This year's Main Event will have unprecedented coverage, with more televised hours than ever. These changes haven't come without controversy, though, because a scheduling conflict has forced ESPN to scramble.

Suzanne Carrillo, as she cheerfully admits, doesn't look like the stereotype of a pro poker player, hunched over cards in a smoky back room.

Most obviously, she's a young woman (31 years old) in a male-dominated game with a big smile and an outgoing personality.

Of the 6,494 who started, 648 will be getting paychecks. When it got down to 649 players, the eliminations came to a halt because not one player went broke over 1 hour, 48 minutes, the longest such spell in WSOP history.

The bubble stage is often seen as a period of the tournament that separates the men from the boys.

Top pros, uninterested in the $21,365 prize for 648th place, will often get more aggressive at this stage and take advantage of those amateurs looking to hang on by playing conservatively.

Poker:Wsop Day 2B Update

A mammoth 4-level Day 2B at the World Series of Poker Main Event came to an end just before 11pm Vegas time Wednesday with more than half of the original 2 924 entrants eliminated in eight scorching hours of intense online poker Betting.

Day 2B represents the last of the heats, combining the survivors of Day 1C and 1D. When Day 3 starts on Friday July 10th, it will see the survivors of Day 2A and Day 2B merged for the first time into one highly competitive field at the Rio in Las Vegas as the quest for the $8 million+ first prize in this $10 000 buy-in event continues.

The player with the most tournament wins at the World Series of Poker says he's no longer avoiding aggressive opponents who threaten to knock him out of the main event this year.

"This year I decided, let's play online poker," Phil Hellmuth told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "All those amateurs making all those crazy moves on me that they got away with in the past, this year I'm calling."

The 11-time gold bracelet winner has been known to avoid plays for all his chips in the past, because he believes he can outplay others without giving them a chance to get lucky.

That means that opponents have simply shoved all-in against him to respond to his extra-tight play.

"This year, when I do have a strong hand I win tons of chips because everybody's overplaying their hand against me," said Hellmuth, who won the no-limit Texas Hold 'em main event 20 years ago. "That's been a good strategy for players against me for years, is to just get all their money in, but not this year.

World Series of Poker players

Nearly 1,500 players started the World Series of Poker main event on Tuesday with a flurry of all-in bets as they worked to claim a spot in the event's third day.

While many players simply looked to get through their second sessions without being eliminated, some tried to accumulate large amounts of chips to make a deep run in the no-limit Texas Hold 'em tournament.

Actor Jason Alexander started the day among the chip leaders with nearly 90,000 chips, and said he gained about 20,000 more chips during the first two levels of play, but was back down to about 56,000 by the dinner break.

"I have no illusions about where I'm going to wind up in this thing," Alexander told The Associated Press. "My aggressiveness is counterbalanced by the fact that I just don't want to be stupid. And when you're a C-plus, B-minus player and you've got some chips, you can get stupid."

Poker event turns away over 500 angry players

World Series of Poker officials are facing hundreds of angry players who were turned away from the no-limit Texas Hold ‘em main event because of capacity.


World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack told players on Monday that he was sorry, but the tournament simply reached its limits and couldn’t accommodate more entries.

Roughly 2,700 players entered the tournament on Monday, the last day players are able to begin playing in the event. More than 500 people were rejected.

Officials expected to release the total prize pool and top prize later in the day. About 10 percent of roughly 6,400 players will earn money in the tournament.

Last year, Peter Eastgate won $9.15 million for beating 6,843 others in the $10,000 buy-in tournament.

The Online Railbird Report Antonius: Dwan, Hansen in Heavy Action

On Thursday evening, Gus Hansen strolled into the Brasilia Room at the Rio Convention Center, making his first appearance at this year’s WSOP, a full two weeks since the first cry of “Shuffle up and deal!” Hansen loitered around, chatting with fellow high-stakes players such as David Benyamine, Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Sami “LarsLuzak” Kelopuro and Phil Ivey, who were playing the $10,000 World Championship No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven Draw event. Well over an hour into play, he finally decided to buy in. Hansen and Ivey busted on Day 2 and Benyamine made the final table, but Dwan and Kelopuro were some of the tournament’s first casualties, sending them back to the online poker tables after only a few hours at the Rio.


Prioritizing the lucrative cash-game action, both live and online, has been an emerging theme among the high-stakes players in town for the WSOP. Hansen has only played the one event, Dwan and Kelopuro have played two apiece, and Patrik Antonius has yet to take a seat in a single WSOP tournament this year. With the high-stakes regulars largely forgoing the tournament action at the Rio, the online cash games have been positively swinging, with Dwan logging another profitable week at the virtual tables to shrink his year-to-date losses to $338,000 from the more than $4 million he was down only a few weeks ago.

Jeff Carris wins $1,500 shootout

The shootout events at the World Series of online Poker continue to grow in popularity, primarily due to the fact online poker players engage in single-table tournaments all the time. To win Event 22, the $1,500 no-limit hold 'em shootout, which attracted a young field of 999 players, a player would need to win three single-table tournaments to claim the title. Jeff Carris, a 23-year-old professional online poker Bet player from Wadsworth, Ohio, outplayed his opponents and won his first WSOP bracelet and $313,673.

Carris had support behind him with his parents flying in and a large crowd of fans helping the "Wildcat" to victory. He moved to Las Vegas only two years ago and has played professionally since. Carris has one other WSOP cash for $4,559 for finishing in 138th place in a $1,500 no-limit hold 'em event in 2008.

The final table of this event consisted of no former WSOP bracelet holders and it was the ninth time that this has occurred during the 2009 WSOP. Making the money, but not the final table, was Tony Cousineau, who holds the record for most WSOP cashes (38) without a title.

WSOP Event #23: Allemann buries Fossilman

Greg Raymer's day is over. Playing in day two of the $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Lowball, he was never able to get his challenge moving, despite ducking and diving in pots.

In the end, the final damage was done by Team PokerStars Germany Pro Anton Allemann, who found 8-6-5-4-3, good enough to eliminate the Fossilman.

It's slow going, with 27 players still left, and the money not kicking in until 14th place. But Allemann is now nicely placed - up to 117,000 with the average on 106,000.

2009 WSOP: Serock, Parker Lead #19 NLHE 6-Handed

135 players returned to the felt for Day 2 of Event #19, Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em at the World Series of online Poker, just 27 spots shy of the money bubble.

Brett Switzer came into the day as the chip leader on a stack of 183,000. As with most Day 2's at this year’s WSOP, the plan was to play down to a final table and as with other events, that goal was not quite reached. By the time action was halted, just 11 players remained for the not-quite-final table, with Joe Serock and Brock “t soprano” Parker way out in front as the only players to crack the million-chip mark. Serock tops the leaderboard with 1,754,000, while Parker – who just recently picked up a gold bracelet in Event #14 – is close behind with 1,603,000.

Lemke dedicates $5k WSOP win to Shronk

Lemke was overwhelmed following his hard-won victory.
"It's a sick thing to happen," Lemke revealed.

He had to conquer a final table replete with marquee names, one of whom was online sensation Isaac "WestmenloAA" Baron.

Baron looked ready to dominate the final table in the early stages, eliminating danger-man David pham and Christian Iacobellis in the same hand to set himself up with a big stack.

He couldn't maintain this momentum however, crashing out in 7th place to Lemke when his top pair was outkicked and he was unable to slip the noose.

Danny Illingworth succumbed shortly after this, and he was joined at the rail by Lika Gerasimova, the girlfriend of 2008 WSOP main Event runner-up ,Ivan Demidov.

Gerasimova's reputation as a top-flight online poker player is growing all the time, and it won't have been hurt by her 5th-place finish here.

Four-handed, it was Quoss who appeared to be the man to beat. The German built a huge stack, which he used effectively as a weapon to subdue the other players.

Poker event, Vince Carter deal synagogue helping hand

A betting cage inside the Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room, and this man of God was there to oversee of all things -- a poker tournament with more than 276 players.

But it gets stranger because members of his congregation at B'nai Torah were the organizers.

Kane chuckles at the oxymoron of a synagogue organizing what some could call a secular activity, but describes it as "a congregation betting on poker in stressful financial times."

He said the temple participates in a number of charitable events, including sending gift boxes to troops overseas. However, as the country sinks into a recession and more people find it harder to give, "we couldn't keep going to the same sources," he said.

So the group brainstormed different events that would attract a larger audience beyond the congregation. In May, they sponsored a Platters concert, and Sunday it was the Inaugural Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza Poker Tournament, which was co-sponsored by The Venetian Las Vegas resort hotel and casino.

NBA superstar and hometown hero Vince Carter of the New Jersey Nets participated as a celebrity player. He said he often plays at the kennel club and that when B'nai Torah asked him whether he would be a part of the tournament.

But that wasn't the only treat players received Sunday, as the prize purse totaled about $35,000. The first-place prize, worth about $8,500, included a $5,000 seat at The Venetian's Deep Stack Extravaganza III Main Event on July 13. Second- through fifth-place prizes were valued at about $5,500 and included entry into The Venetian online Poker Room's Deep Stack Extravaganza III $2,100 event June 26. There were also $5,000 in door prizes.

2009 WSOP Update: Phil Ivey Wins Sixth WSOP Bracelet

As we pointed out yesterday, the $2,500 No Limit Deuce to Seven Draw event here at the 2009 WSOP started with a stacked field but had really become just kind of ho-hum by the time the final table rolled around with only one real storyline. But it was a good one. The question floating around was whether Phil Ivey could rise from seventh in chips at the final table to take down his sixth WSOP bracelet, and the answer was an emphatic yes.

After slugging his way up the chip counts, Ivey found himself in a marthon heads-up duel against John Monnette. However, it just seemed like destiny tht Ivey woulkd take it downm, and he did. Ivey walked with $96,361 for winning the event, but more importantly, he got his sixth WSOP bracelet. That puts him on the same level as poker pros like Men “The Master” Nguyen, T.J. "The Cookie" Cloutier, and Layne Flack at seventh on the list of all-time bracelet winners.

There's even more action happening today in the Amazon Room at the 2009 WSOP as the $10,000 World Championship Mixed event moves onto Day 2. The storylines abound in this event at the moment as we have another stacked field with 124 of the origial 194 players remaining.Poker pro Daniel Negreanu is currently one of the chip leaders and is hunting his fifth WSOP bracelet. He is joined at the tables by Jimmy "gobboboy" Fricke, Brandon Adams, Andy Black, David "The Dragon" Pham, Scotty Nguyen, Erick Lindgren, Doyle Brunson and a whole lot more names that you recognize.

Phil Ivey Wins World Series of Poker Bracelet #6

Phil Ivey captured his sixth World Series of Poker bracelet on Thursday evening after taking down the $2,500 No Limit Deuce-to-Seven event, but it wasn't easy.

Ivey was one of the short stacks heading into the final table, but that didn't matter - he was able to battle back and eventually win his sixth bracelet.


John Monnette had the pleasure of squaring off against the best poker player in the world in heads-up play.

Monnette, who started out heads-up play with a 615k to 481k chip advantage, initially looked as though he was going to get completely obliterated by Ivey.

The chip lead swung back and forth during heads-up action, but eventually Ivey was able to overcome the very tough Monnette.

For his victory in this event, Phil Ivey will take home $96,361, plus the coveted World Series of Poker bracelet.

A Lot Is Going On At The 2009 WSOP Right Now

Sweet poker gods, there's a lot going at the Rio right now. A total of five events are in different stages of play throughout the many event rooms here, and the crowds, yelling and sound of shuffling chips is now almost overwhelming as we start to wrap up Day 37,654 of the 2009 WSOP.

$1,000 No Limit Holdem - The monstrous starting field of 6,012 has now been narrowed down to the paltry nine players who will make up the final table. Dan Heimiller is currently the chip leader for this event, followed by the only notable player left in the running, Steve Sung. The final table will get underway at 2pm Vegas time tomorrow, and they will play down until they award the $770k first-place prize.

$1,500 Pot Limit Omaha - To be honest, we're not entirely sure we knew that this event was going on. However, they are down to 12 players out of a starting field of 809 with two well-known players still in the field, Dario Alioto and Jason Mercier. Top prize is $237,415 and will be awarded at some point tomorrow, we think.

$10,000 Seven Card Stud - Still 14 players left out of 142 and several well-known players, including Daniel Negreanu, Greg "FBT" Mueller, Max Pescatori, Mel Judah and Jeff Lisandro. They will play down to a nine-person final table tonight and will award the $373,744 first-place prize tomorrow.

$1,500 No Limit Holdem - An astounding 2,791 players turned out for this event and the field shed most of them pretty rapidly, narrowing down to only 338. We'd let you knwo who the chip leaders are except that PolerNews cut back on their budget by eliminating Day 1 chip counts, so….. yeh. We can tell you that Bodog poker pros Evelyn Ng and Justin Bonomo were out in the field, but fell victim to the quality of play one only finds in WSOP donkaments and your cousin's home game. However, we're pretty sure that by tomorrow Evy will have purchased a Vespa, so there's always that. We'll have to see if we can get a ride on it and maybe some video, hmmmm.

$2,500 No Limit Deuce to Seven Draw - Another event that completely snuck up on us, and by "snuck up on us" we mean another event that could've finished up without us noticing if we hadn't heard someone mention it. Looks like it snuck up on some others as well as there were only 147 players registered and only 56 players remaining. As it is Day 1 of this event, and factoring in PokerNews' aforementioned reticence when it come to Day 1 chip counts, we can tell you that there are some players with names left competing for the top prize of more than we make in a year.

WSOP Update:Bonomo at Final Table, WSOP Champions Invitational

Here are some quick updates from the 2009 WSOP as Day 673 wraps up … Wait, what? We're only been here for four days? Crap. Well, anyway, here you go:

Event No. 2 - $40,000 40th Anniversary Special: The final table of this event is still grinding away over in the televised featured table area. Two more players have been shown to the door, Lex 'RaSZi' Veldhuis (7th - $277,940) and Alec Torelli (6th - $329,730), leaving five left to fight it out for the $1.89 million first-place prize. Current chip leader is Vitaly Lunkin after Greg Raymer doubled up Dani Stern to keep him in the tournament. Bodog poker pro Justun Bonomo is now the short-stack at the table, but that doesn't really mean much as he quite capable of making a comeback.

Event No. 3 - $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo 8-or-Better: The final table for this event has now been set and features poker pro Feddy Deeb and online poker pro Jordan "Octavian_C" Rich. There are seven other players at the table but only their mother's know who they are. Play gets underway tomorrow at 2pm and will award $263,135 as the top prize.

Event No. 4 - $1,000 No Limit Holdem: There are still A LOT of players left in this event. The official numbers were just released and the final tally for entrants stands at 6,012, making it officially the largest non-Main Event ever, officially. The top 621 places will get paid for their troubles with 621st receiving $1,893 all the way up to $771,338 for first-place.
